Fired

Small sgrafitto Lorem ipsum and snail cup ( , 150 mL). Mid-fire white clay, slip and clear glaze. Wheel thrown and fired to cone 6.

This is the first piece I have made employing the sgrafitto technique. Besides a couple of typos, the outside of the fired piece also has a few glazing defects: a few unglazed spots near the bottom, a few crazes, and the two milky stripes resulting from the double dipping.

Concept statement:

Although the text is intended to be understood as the standard typographer’s dummy type, the actual text from Cicero’s de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum is used. The composition was inspired by the Crossing Sensory Boundaries conference and an “exquisite corpse” picture some of us drew in Jade’s apartment in 2013.
