“And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights” bowl (⌀ 7″, 310 mL). Mid-fire reclaimed clay and glazes. Wheel thrown and fired to cone 6.
This is the first piece I have ever done that involves painting an entire surface with underglaze.
Concept statement:
This painting depicts the Chinese character for “catastrophe” — water over fire. While “rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights” (Genesis 7:12), the underwater world might have been simultaneously flooded by underwater volcanoes (Morris, 2004). All the while, the lives of eight people were spared in an ark.
