Artist’s statement

“On the first day of Christmas, a child was born in a manger.”

The imagery alludes to a couple of Christmas carols and most of this imagery was originally process work for a Christmas concert poster that I did on a volunteer basis.

The type treatment was a continuation of the experimentation that I did during face2face in September where I handwrote English and French text as if they were Chinese calligraphy. So we could consider this composition as asking the question “Can we treat type so that it looks Chinese without resorting to the cliché of amateurish brush strokes?” Can we coerce Roman type to conform to Chinese typographic norms to make it look Chinese? I think the answer is yes, at least up to a certain extent.
